Things I Can’t Believe

I know that the year has twelve months
and we’ve gotten through the first four,
but I can’t believe that there are eight more to go
followed by another twelve
and another. For who knows how long.
And I’ll just have to accept that.

I can’t believe that the eyes are the last sense to develop
when you’re born,
but it’s one of the first to go when you die.

I guess this means that
we don’t have much time to see each other.

I can’t believe that you still look at me like that
but thank you. That’s how I look at you, too.
And I can’t wait to see you again.

Of all the things I can’t believe, I still can’t accept that
emotions are absorbed in only six seconds
human hair grows six inches per year
and that it’s been six years
since you’ve been gone.

I mean no disrespect, but

I will bump into you one day
and it’ll be like no time has passed
and it’ll be like you haven’t passed
and the only thing that I can’t believe
is that it hasn’t happened yet.
